Designed by famed theater architect John Eberson, the Niels Esperson Building was completed in 1927, followed by the Mellie Esperson Building in 1941. The buildings are known for their intricate architectural details, including massive columns, ornate urns, terraces, and the iconic tempietto at the top, inspired by the 1502 structure at San Pietro in Rome. Mellie Esperson commissioned the original building in memory of her husband, Niels, a prominent real estate and oil tycoon. His name is carved prominently above the entrance of the Niels Esperson Building. The Mellie Esperson Building, a 19-story annex to the original, is constructed in Art Deco style, differentiating it from the neo-classical design of the Niels Esperson structure.
