(132m) tall, Phoenix Tower at Greenway Plaza is the 36th tallest building in Houston. It was completed in 1984 and was acquired by Group RMC in June 2023. The building features a Jack Nicklaus-designed nine-hole putting green atop its parking garage, providing tenants with a unique space to relax during the day. The building has housed notable tenants, including Trico Marine Services, which relocated its headquarters to The Woodlands but still maintains a presence in the tower. Phoenix Tower at Greenway Plaza was also the former headquarters of Champion Technologies. After its acquisition by Ecolab, the combined company, Nalco Champion, continues to occupy space within the tower. Recent Renovations In late 2019, the Phoenix Tower completed a renovation of its ninth-floor Sky Terrace, a signature outdoor space within Greenway Plaza. Upgrades included replacing St. Augustine grass with artificial turf, enhancing the reflection pool, adding new seating areas and lawn games, and introducing Adirondack chairs for lounging. These improvements aim to make the Sky Terrace a popular venue for tenant gatherings, dining, and relaxation. The renovations align with Phoenix Tower’s continuing efforts to elevate tenant experiences. A garage annex, completed in late 2019, added 247,000 square feet with 600 parking spaces across eight floors, providing direct covered access to The Hub, Greenway Plaza’s restaurant and amenity core. Historical Context When Phoenix Tower opened in 1984, Houston’s office market was struggling due to the downturn in the energy sector, leading to high vacancy rates. The building, part of the Greenway Plaza development by Century Development, was once referred to as a "see-through" building because of its vacancy. Today, it is a thriving part of Greenway Plaza, which spans 4 million square feet of office and mixed-use space, with the area having undergone extensive revitalization since its early days.
